Map markers are refreshing when settings view is opened

Describe the bug
The map markers disappear for a split second when the settings drawer is opened or closed.

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Open the app. See the markers.
2. Click on the gear icon to open the settings drawer.
3. Notice how the markers disappear for a split second.

Expected behavior
The map markers should not refresh if the data stays constant.
