Brave browser freezing

Hello, I recently installed the CachyOS kernel to see how it performs as a daily driver on my system and I ran into a very peculiar issue with Brave browser. I have it installed through Flatpak and very regularly it freezes during usage. The freeze corrects itself after a few seconds. I have not been able to figure out whether this is localized to just Brave or if it is a deeper Chromium issue. I only know it does not happen with the stock Fedora kernel.

What I've installed:

• kernel-cachyos kernel-cachyos-devel-matched
• cachyos-settings
• ananicy-cpp with CachyOS rules

I'm not sure what logs I can provide, do let me know if there is anything specific I can dig up to help localize the problem further.

System information:

OS: Fedora Linux 42 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition) x86_64
Kernel: Linux 6.16.0-cachyos2.fc42.x86_64
DE: KDE Plasma 6.4.4
WM: KWin (Wayland)
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X (16) @ 5.58 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT [Discrete]

@AdivonSlav I noticed that Discord (Chromium-based) was freezing on me a lot a week ago but it disappeared by itself. No idea of what changed.

If it's too annoying then I suggest switching to the official Fedora kernel, or the 6.15.8 version of the CachyOS kernel, until 6.16.1, you can switch until the next update using grubby --set-default=/boot/.

Right, I forgot Fedora is still not on 6.16, could very well be a kernel regression from upstream with Chromium. I'll try this, thanks !

They just started testing 6.16.0 and I'm keeping a close eye on their progress as there seems to be a problem with PCIe when the computer wakes up from sleep.

Maybe something doesn't recognize 6.16 as a valid kernel version.

It does happen on Signal Desktop as well for me, meaning it's most likely a Chromium problem it seems.

@AdivonSlav Fedora's official 6.16.0 kernel is out for testing so you could try downloading it and see if you have the same problem with it. My PCIe problem is also there with the official kernel so it's not specific to the CachyOS kernel.

Still happens with 6.16.1-cachyos1.fc42.x86_64 , I'll check the Fedora testing one soon.

I can confirm the chromium periodical freezing issue isn't isolated to the CachyOS kernel. I appears to be an a bug introduced in 6.16.0 that effects anything chromium based.

I tested versions 6.16.1-200.fc42.x86_64 and 6.16.2-200.fc42.x86_64 of Fedora's official testing kernels and the issue presented in both of those kernels. For now I plan on sticking with kernels prior to 6.16.0. Hopefully it's fixed in 6.16.3.

The issue appears to be fixed in 6.16.3. I just upgraded from 6.15.10 to 6.16.3-200_tkg.fc42.x86_64 and so far I've not run into it at all.

Edit: I just tested 6.16.3-cachyos1.fc42.x86_64 as well and can also confirm the issue is fixed here too.

Unfortunately, not in my case. Brave on kernel 6.16.3 still freezes.

linux-cachyos-lts (6.12) is free of this bug, so in my case, I'll probably wait a little longer.

Well that's perplexing considering I've been using 6.16.3 for a day now without running into the issue, whereas all chromium based apps were freezing multiple times a minute on prior kernels.

To add some extra context although I'm not sure it should have any impact on this issue, I am using the preempt=full kernel parameter and this is the output of uname -a for me: Linux gwen-t1 6.16.3-cachyos1.fc42.x86_64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Aug 27 03:42:08 UTC 2025 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I'm on a amd Ryzen 9 7950X with a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090. And i see the freezing with the latest cachyos kernel. and it seems to be resolved with the lts release.
What GPU/CPU are you running @Gwenodai
