How can I filter for specific file extensions without going into the menu?

I’m looking for a way to filter by specific file types using the search bar. Is this possible?

At the moment the easiest way is via the Stats page. You can tap on the mime types next to the graph, to filter by that type.

I need to bother you again briefly because I think I found a bug with the new filters. At least, I can’t explain it otherwise. I’m getting duplicate entries. Here are the screenshots:

Update: Looks like Aves is actually seeing some kind of difference between those duplicate entries. When I tap the first "mp4", it shows all the mp4 files like it should. But when I tap the second "mp4" entry, it just gives me an empty page saying "no images". Same deal with the "webm" entries -the first one works fine, the second one only shows a single webm. And I honestly have no idea what makes that particular webm any different from the others. Kinda weird…

I've checked and there's an actual difference. For example, I have 2 "AVI" filters that look like duplicates, but the underlying MIME types are in this case "video/avi" and "video/vnd.avi". I'll try and standardize/merge types so that this technical detail doesn't yield confusing results to users.

I think that’s the right call. While I’m at it, I noticed something else that might improve Aves. Let me know if you’d prefer this as a separate issue or if you feel it’s not worth considering.

I realized the filter/tag overview is a little inconsistent. Some filters are shown dynamically — like only displaying tags that actually exist in the collection, which I really appreciate. But other filters, like “Favorites,” “Motion Photos,” or the star rating filters, are always visible, even though I don’t use them. I think it would be awesome if those were only shown when relevant content is available. Not only would this be much clearer, but that way, the behavior between tag filters and the standard filters would also feel more consistent.

And if that’s not something you’d want to set as default, having an option for it would still be a great addition.

Also, one small thing: a year-based filter would be a nice extra too.

Regarding type filters, I'm now normalizing them, but I don't know specifically the variations that you see on your device. So if you're willing to help, please install this test build. It will install as "Aves [Profile]" and is a separate app from the regular build, so the settings, db, etc. are independent.

After installing, launch it and let it scan. Afterwards, if you spot duplicate format filters, long press on them and you'll see the MIME type in the title of the filter context menu. I need to know all the MIME types of the duplicates.

Tags are derived from your collection, they could be anything. So only your tags are displayed, there's no other way. They are in essence completely different from generic filters (such as motion photos or HDR).

The Search page is exhaustive and shows all filters (unless you start typing of course). The Stats page is contextual and shows filters for the current collection only. I do not intend to change that.

Also, one small thing: a year-based filter would be a nice extra too.

The Stats page has contextual time-based filters. When the current collection spans over a year, tapping on the histogram shows year filters. When spanning less than a year, it shows year/month filters, etc.

Alright, I’ve installed the test build and followed your instructions. The weird thing is that the “mp4” entry suddenly isn’t showing up twice anymore — not even in my regular app (the non-test build one). Earlier, I deleted a bunch of images from my trash, so maybe one of those files was causing the duplicate entry? Who knows. But the “webm” entry is still showing up twice for me. Here’s the result:

Thanks. Does the second WEBM filter (the "image/webm" one) shows any media? If so, could you please share with me a sample (unmodified)?

The file is 1.92 MB in size and in WEBM format, but in Aves it behaves like an image because it can’t be played. I suspect it’s simply a corrupted WEBM file. That would also explain why I was able to upload it to Google Drive, but when I try to download it again, Google Drive doesn’t recognize it and says the file format isn’t supported. So I’ll just delete the file now -that should settle the matter. Sorry for the trouble.
