Issue upgrading 9.06.02 to 9.13.7 -- IBeacon

Hi, I am getting this issue when upgrading DNN site to 9.13.7. The upgrade goes thru, but cannot log in.

System.TypeLoadException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Services.ImprovementsProgram.IBeaconService' from assembly 'DotNetNuke, Version=9.13.7.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null'.
at Dnn.PersonaBar.Library.Containers.PersonaBarContainer.GetConfigration(PortalSettings portalSettings)

Please let me know how I can fix this. Thank you!

Did you follow the suggested upgrade path? In this case, that would be an upgrade to 9.1.1, then 9.3.2, and then 9.13.7.

Hi @bdukes my apologies I said the wrong version. We went from 9.06.02 to 9.13.7 and ran into this problem.

Are you using Evoq? I don't believe the beacon service is a part of DNN Platform.

Thank you @bdukes! I am working on this as well. It is not Evoq, or we don't think it was at the time that the site was first set up in 2017. What should we be looking for if it happened to have been an Evoq install? Is this a setting in the configuration tables?

Okay, it looks like this was removed in 9.8.0 (#4121), with an assumption that it wasn't being used. There was code corresponding to your error message related to the beacon which was removed with that change. This makes me think that your Dnn.PersonaBar.Library.dll assembly was not changed to the new version as part of your upgrade. Did you see any errors during the upgrade? You can look at the properties of that file in the bin folder to determine if it's the right version or not. If not, you may want to look for other assemblies that aren't the right version.

Thank you again @bdukes. Yes we did see some errors but I need to go back to the team to review them. Yes that DLL wasn't updated and we are looking for the latest Dnn.PersonaBar.Library.dll. I downloaded the 9.13.7 and 9.8.0 ZIP and I don't see that DLL in the /bin folder. Possible to point us to the deployment ZIP that has it?

Also we had been following the suggested upgrade path going from 9.6 to 9.13.7, but perhaps there was an interim upgrade that should have been done? Thanks again!

Thanks again @bdukes We reverted back to 9.6.2 and the DLL is 5.2.3 (I made a typo above regarding version number) and don't have a binding redirect to 5.3 in the web.config (please see below). It's as if the 9.13.7 requires a later version of the DLL and we have been looking around and can't seem to find a place to pull that updated DLL (even in Nuget). Is there a place here in the DNN repos where that updated DLL can be found?

The upgrade package includes Install/Library/AspNetWebApi_5.3.61130.707_Install.zip which will install the 5.3 DLL, including the binding redirect. So it seems as though something overwrote that DLL after it was upgraded successfully.

Sometimes unexpected stuff installs if you have zip files in Install/Modules folder before the upgrade... Might be worth checking.
.zip files will always install and .resources files will only install if there is already a previous version installed if I remember correctly....

Thank you @bdukes and @valadas someone on my side suggested that I didn't have the correct folder permissions to allow all ZIPs to be properly uncompressed and give the folders "Network Service" permissions perhaps. I am going to give that a try in the tomorrow morning.

Related to that, one thing you may need to look out for is the main upgrade zip being marked as untrusted. Make sure you unblock the zip file if necessary before using it.
