I would like the ability to turn off read receipts for entire channels.
Why would you like to do it?
We use Element as the primary chat application in our company. Read receipts (now with timestamp) might create pressure for people to respond to something after they read a message. I want people in our company to not feel pressure or feel that they need to keep Element closed and not read messages until they are ready to answer them. I've heard of several people that dont want to open Element just to avoid the notification being sent.
Similarly it can also tell others that they haven't read a message. Maybe they have a doctor's appointment, or are away from their computer.
I realize that these effects are psychological and perhaps something that can be solved as well with company culture, but this is not particularly easy. If our primary communication tool can help us achieve better work/life boundaries and I think it would be a better tool.
