How do I upgrade the OS version in VM

Looks like HyperV doesn't allow me to do this using Windows update in VM like what I usually do on the host. I tried this way once but eventually got stuck in a black screen on boot after upgrade. So I had to roll it back.

Can anyone let me know the correct way？

Use an ISO to update. A good source for those is UUP Dump. I use it frequently and they have a lot of versions that you can find by build number or KB number. If doing this for Hyper-V gpu partitions, I have found the latest that works without locking up the VM on boot is build 26100.4349. Build 26100.4652 and up have tanked numerous VM's on me. You were likely in the same boat. Not a failed update, but rather an incompatibility in Windows build with partitioned gpu. As usual, make sure your VM's and Host build numbers match for best compatibility/function.
