Public data for demonstrating toolbox code #1

I think it'd be helpful for users to be able to test the code tools with public data, ideally NMFS data. That said, I'm having trouble finding easily accessible, public sources from NMFS. Some sources I've looked into (avoiding data that are traditionally plotted in non-NMFS branding (e.g., ENSO, PDO)):

  • COPEPOD: Kind of unwieldy, requires users to download data in order to use it
  • OceanWatch: Allows data access via ERDDAP, regionally specific but we could include examples from other CoastWatch nodes
  • PolarWatch: Allows data access via ERDDAP, plus our working group includes PolarWatch expertise
  • palmerpenguins: Not from NOAA and requires an additional R package, but has some benefits over iris data (less troublesome past, includes NAs)
  • Mauna Loa CO2 data: Simple format, but maybe too simple for some plotting applications?
  • NEFSC's ecodata: Regionally specific and requires some installation, but from NMFS and there's a lot there

I stopped here to keep the list from getting too long. Also, I think it's reasonable to use few different data sources to give multiple examples. As time allows, please add your thoughts to the issue. Thanks!
