Add support for `CompoundBoundingBox` in `footprint`

Due to the issues described in #589, `CompoundBoundingBox` does not currently fit into the implementation of the `footprint` method. Once discrete coordinate values are supported it should be possible to predict and account for them as part of a `CompoundBoundingBox`.
