Some 💡 ideas/feature suggestions after using the platform for a month- majority are UI suggestions 🐦

I came over from Birdnet-Pi about 6 weeks ago and absolutely love Go (migrated my data over as well using pi2go!). It's provided so much joy to me and others here-- and the birdweather integration lets my family from around the world connect with this location in a very meaningful way with no travel required. Thank you, @tphakala .

I've been keeping a text document to scribble down ideas/suggestions as I think of them and will go ahead and share! They are mostly UI suggestions, but a couple other things as well. Please let me know if any feedback/clarification/testing/etc might be helpful and I'll reply ASAP. Thank you again!

(UI) General: 

	Persist or possibly make global the gain slider/control for soundscape playback across all waveforms/recordings? 
		Why? It's a bit arduous to manually boost gain on all waveforms when going through a list of detections/using the waveform for playback in any capacity. 
			Perhaps embed a very minimal media player or volume control in a static location in the sidebar and pipe all audio playback through that instead of the current waveform playback display object? 

	A terminal function or similar in the UI itself.
		Why? Would be particularly nice to have logging hotkeys/buttons in the UI for things like:
			Reboot
			Restart service
			View logs: journalctl -u birdnet-go.service -f
				Filter only detection-related log events (this command is not functional since containerized logs implemented):

				**I LOVE watching the active logging in a terminal session while listening to the live audio feed. It has *dramatically* improved my ability to identify birds by their calls. I hear a call, I immediately look at terminal, and I know what bird it was within seconds. It's amazing, and I feel like everyone would benefit hugely from this without having to use putty/CLI to connect to the device separately/in a separate utility to accomplish this.**
				
				Separately, I would have never known if "regular" but not-yet-confirmed birds were being discarded due to too-restrictive settings unless I had a separate terminal open and was actively watching the live logs regularly discarding them. 

(UI) Dashboard:
	
	A small speaker icon on the main Dashboard, next to the thumbnail of each bird, which plays the/a highest confidence recorded call/detection for the species. No waveform, no volume control, no timestamp/detail, just immedaitely playback @ system volume. 
		Why? It can be a chore for some to drill into the detections and use the waveform to play clips, especially on mobile devices- instant gratification and simplifying the bird call learning curve.

	In desktop mode, a slider to control the amount of space the left sidebar occupies would help (the frame border can be moved), or an option to entirely collapse the sidebar in desktop mode, similar to the mobile view
		Why? Quality of life @ different resolutions/screens.

	A toggle/setting to adjust the size of the thumbnail images in the main Dashboard (Sm/Med/L)
		Why? Quality of life @ different resolutions/screens.

	A toggle to adjust the spacing of the Dashboard in general-- (L/M/S/Compact) -- Scales generally everything on the page some uniform amount to fit some arbitrary standard
		Why? Quality of life @ different preferences/visual impairments/level of comfort with various devices/resolutions. 
		
	A separate Dashboard/heatmap of unconfirmed (species) detections, perhaps visually incorporating the average percent confidence across the indiv tests/samples, in addition to the timeframe heatmap as well.
		Why? This would have helped me dial in the various threshold detection factors (Sensitivity, Overlap, Dynamic Threshold) to optimize my config.
			
			Perhaps it can be integrated into the existing Dashboard display (or exist as a different "Unconfirmed" display altogether)
				*Perhaps a toggle on the existing Dashboard, which simply turns ON/OFF the inclusion of unconfirmed tested species on the same/primary hourly chart. And a mouseover on the unconfirmed objects might display average % confidence in the tested samples for that species over the same time period displayed on the chart.
					If keeping this amount of data is unsustainable, perhaps only allow a max of -30 days of unconfirmed records to be kept. Don't need to save the unconfirmed recordings, but seeing the data from them would be very helpful. 

	Toggle/Option to add "Categories" on the Dashboard to visually containerize detected birds. Reference Merlin mobile app > "Explore" util for category reference: waterfowl, hawks, flycatchers, warblers, thrushes, etc etc)
		Why? I had no idea certain birds were classified the way they are until I randomly checked "Explore" in Merlin (Phoebe and Pewee are flycatchers!?). This helps me understand what their expected behaviors might be (unrelated to their calls).

(UI) Analytics: 

	ISSUE: When selecting a time frame which includes a date earlier than the earliest detection in the DB, the total values across the top (Total Detections, Unique Species, Avg. Confidence, Most Common) do not populate any data- only 0's. 

		Related (probably), when selecting the "All Time" option for Analytics, it throws an error in the log:
			API Error [3pprERRg] from <IP ADDRESS> (Tunneled: false, Provider: unknown): Failed to get species summary data: error scanning species summary data: sql: Scan error on column index 2, name "species_code": converting NULL to string is unsupported

	I would like to be able to click on the "unique species" count/object at the top of the Analytics tab and see a simple list of unique species. 
		Why? It appears there is no (clear?) way to do this, presently. Being able to toggle/sort/group by "categories" of birds would also be a huge benefit here. 
			Include first and most recent detected dates? Ability to sort the list by these variables/dates?
	
	Can there be a greater maximum number of allowed objects/species in the "New Species Detected" display? 
		Why? It appears to be limited to 20 species. I'm not sure what the best solution is for this, but some better visualization of first detections of ALL identified birds would be great. I have several ideas for visualization on this- can provide concept versions for reference/clarity. 			

Logging: 
	
	Include/make visible/expose the actual % confidence of each tested clip in the log entry?
		Why? To provide some/any awareness around optimizing detection thresholds. 
			Example output: May 07 21:00:36 feathers docker[835]: 2025/05/07 21:00:36 Discarding detection (37%) of american woodcock from source malgo due to false positive, matched 2/7 times

Notifications:
	
	SMTP or similar/any sort of function to send notifications on new species detections? `

I just wanted to share some visualizations I made in the last week using Observable.

...outputs a CSV. Using that data, and the CSV from eBird's taxonomy data (attached) of bird families & species, various visualizations were created. I'm simply providing this as a reference for ideas @ visualizations/categorizations, especially since the newly implemented "Species" Analytics in the Birdnet-go UI look so good!

Workflow to update these tools is manual (just overwrite the SQL query output CSV in Observable with a newer version), so hopefully these can serve as some examples/possible native visualizations for the BN-go platform moving forward.
