Pictogram Calendar Based on Google Calendar Keywords

User story / idea
As a DAKboard user I’d like to see small pictograms next to calendar events so I can grasp the day’s themes at a glance.

Examples

• If the word “Sport” is found in an event title, show a football icon.
• If the title contains “Birthday”, show a cake icon.
• Several keywords can map to the same icon (e.g. run, football, workout → ⚽️).

Configuration wishes

1. Users can create / remove their own rules (keyword → icon).
2. Rules are saved per calendar panel, so different dashboards can have different rule sets.
3. When several rules match the same event, only the “most important” icon is shown (priority should be configurable).

Possible technical solution (high-level)

• Re-use the existing Google Calendar API fetch.
• Perform a simple text match (case-insensitive) against a list of rules in the front-end.
• Overlay or replace the default calendar dot with an SVG/emoji icon.
• Store rules in the user-settings object (JSON).

Pros

• Faster visual scanning of busy calendars.
• Easy to extend later (regex, colour codes, etc.).

Cons / open questions

• Performance on dashboards with many events?
• How to handle locale (e.g. “sport” vs. “sports”)?
• Accessibility for screen readers (aria-label on icons).

I really like this idea!

FWIW, if you're technically inclined enough to deploy a docker container somewhere, you can achieve much of this functionality with icalfilter. It's nowhere near as straightforward as what you describe, but it works better than nothing. I know, because I used it to set up very similar behavior. I actually modified a bit of the source code for it to allow event title prefix/suffix modifications instead of only complete replacement. I need to submit a pull request to bring that feature into the main release, but even I'm happy to share my modification if you are interested.

The other option is, of course, to add emojis right in the event titles on the calendar itself. This feels like a messy approach, but then, it might be tolerable.
