alas the CMAKE magic variable does not the expected result (the CMake documentation is devoid of useful examples). Reverting to adding system-dependent linker flags by ourselves.

test normally this change is for the better (free is void and return nothing, better put the freed pointer to NULL, as free(NULL) is safe)
